Former Test Umpire David Shepherd dies
David Shepherd, the former England umpire, has died after a long battle with cancer. He was 68.Shepherd was a renowned international umpire and officiated in 172 ODIs, including three consecutive World Cup finals, and 92 Tests between 1983 and 2005.He was appointed as a first-class umpire in 1981 and the speed of his elevation to the international stage was evidence of his ability and the regard in which he was held. His popularity was due in part to the high standard of his work and in part to the manner in which he went about it - with humour, a smile and a gentle touch.His last Test was match between West Indies and Pakistan in Kingston in June 2005 and his final appearance in an ODI was at The Oval in 2005. Shepherd also had a 14-year career at Gloucestershire for whom he played 282 first-class matches.

പെഷവാര്‍: പെഷവാറിലെ മീന ബസാറിലുണ്ടായ സ്‌ഫോടനത്തില്‍ 91 പേര്‍ മരിച്ചതായി ജിയോ ടി.വി. റിപ്പോര്‍ട്ട് ചെയ്തു. ഇരുന്നൂറിലേറെപ്പേര്‍ക്ക് പരിക്കേറ്റിട്ടുണ്ട്. ഇവര്‍ ലേഡി റീഡിങ് ആസ്പത്രിയില്‍ ചികിത്സയില്‍ കഴിയുകയാണ്. പരിക്കേറ്റവരില്‍ സ്ത്രീകളും കുട്ടികളുമുണ്ട്. ഇവരില്‍ ചിലരുടെ നില അതീവ ഗുരുതരമാണെന്ന് ആസ്പത്രി വൃത്തങ്ങള്‍ അറിയിച്ചു.
ഷിയാ വിഭാഗക്കാര്‍ തിങ്ങിപ്പാര്‍ക്കുന്ന പ്രദേശമായ പീപി മണ്ഡിയില്‍ ഇന്ന് ഉച്ചയ്ക്കാണ് സ്‌ഫോടനമുണ്ടായത്. ശക്തമായ സ്‌ഫോടനത്തിന്റെ ആഘാതത്തില്‍ പ്രദേശത്തെ നിരവധി കടകള്‍ പൂര്‍ണമായി തകര്‍ന്നു. കച്ചവടക്കാരില്‍ നല്ലൊരു പങ്കും സ്ത്രീകളാണ്. സ്‌ഫോടനത്തിന്റെ ഉത്തരവാദിത്തം ഏറ്റെടുത്ത് ഒരു വിഭാഗവും ഇതുവരെ രംഗത്തുവന്നിട്ടില്ല. യു.എസ്. സ്‌റ്റേറ്റ് സെക്രട്ടറി ഹിലരി ക്ലിന്റണ്‍ ഇസ്‌ലാമാബാദില്‍ സന്ദര്‍ശനം നടത്തുന്നതിനിടെയാണ് സ്‌ഫോടനമുണ്ടായിരിക്കുന്നത്.

നഴ്‌സിങ് വിദ്യാര്‍ഥിനി മൂന്നാം നിലയില്‍നിന്ന് ചാടി മരിച്ചു
വെള്ളറട: കാരക്കോണം സി.എസ്.ഐ. മെഡിക്കല്‍ കോളേജിലെ ഒന്നാംവര്‍ഷ ജനറല്‍ നഴ്‌സിങ് വിദ്യാര്‍ത്ഥിനി ഗ്രീഷ്മ (18) ഒ.പി. ബ്ലോക്കിന്റെ മൂന്നാംനിലയില്‍നിന്നും ചാടി ആത്മഹത്യചെയ്തു. കെട്ടിടത്തിനുമുകളില്‍നിന്ന്‌വീണ് ഗുരുതരമായി പരിക്കേറ്റ ഗ്രീഷ്മയെ തിരുവനന്തപുരം മെഡിക്കല്‍ കോളേജ് ആസ്പത്രിയില്‍ പ്രവേശിപ്പിച്ചെങ്കിലും ജീവന്‍ രക്ഷിക്കാനായില്ല.
കീഴാറൂര്‍ കുക്കുറണി ഗ്രീഷ്മ നിവാസില്‍ ശശിധരന്റെയും ശോഭനയുടെയും മകളാണ് ഗ്രീഷ്മ. ചൊവ്വാഴ്ച വൈകീട്ട് 6.30-നായിരുന്നു സംഭവം. ദിവസങ്ങള്‍ക്കു മുന്‍പാണ് ക്ലാസ് ആരംഭിച്ചത്. ദിവസവും വൈകീട്ട് ആറിന് നടക്കുന്ന പ്രാര്‍ത്ഥനയില്‍ വിദ്യാര്‍ത്ഥിനിയെ കാണാത്തതിനെത്തുടര്‍ന്ന് അന്വേഷിച്ച കൂട്ടുകാരികളാണ് പരിക്കേറ്റ് നിലത്തുവീണ നിലയില്‍ കണ്ടത്.
എന്നാല്‍ ഇതിനുപിന്നില്‍ റാഗിങ് നടന്നിട്ടുണ്ടാകാമെന്നും സംഭവത്തെക്കുറിച്ച് അന്വേഷണം നടത്തണമെന്നും കോണ്‍ഗ്രസ് മണ്ഡലം പ്രസിഡന്റ് വണ്ടിത്തടം പത്രോസ് ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ടു. എന്നാല്‍ രണ്ടാംവര്‍ഷ വിദ്യാര്‍ത്ഥികള്‍ക്കെല്ലാം അവധി നല്‍കിയിരിക്കുകയാണെന്നും റാഗിങ് നടക്കുവാന്‍ യാതൊരു സാധ്യതയുമില്ലെന്നും മറ്റെന്തെങ്കിലും കാരണമാകാം ഇതിനുപിന്നിലെന്നും കോളേജ് അധികൃതര്‍ പറഞ്ഞു.
റാഗിങ് നടന്നിട്ടുണ്ടോയെന്ന് പരിശോധിക്കുന്നതായി വെള്ളറട എസ്.ഐ. പറഞ്ഞു. നെയ്യാറ്റിന്‍കര ഡിവൈ.എസ്.പി. ഡി.വിജയന്‍ കാരക്കോണം മെഡിക്കല്‍ കോളേജിലെത്തി അന്വേഷണം ആരംഭിച്ചു.കാരക്കോണം മെഡിക്കല്‍ കോളേജിലെ വിദ്യാര്‍ത്ഥിനിയുടെ ആത്മഹത്യയെക്കുറിച്ച് അന്വേഷണം നടത്തി കുറ്റക്കാര്‍ക്കെതിരെ കര്‍ശനനടപടി സ്വീകരിക്കണമെന്ന് എസ്.എഫ്.ഐ. സംസ്ഥാന സെക്രട്ടേറിയറ്റ് പത്രക്കുറിപ്പില്‍ ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ടു.
സീനിയര്‍ വിദ്യാര്‍ത്ഥിനികള്‍ റാഗിങ്ങിന് വിധേയമാക്കിയതിന്റെ മനോവിഷമത്തിലാണ് വിദ്യാര്‍ത്ഥിനി ആത്മഹത്യ ചെയ്തതെന്നും പ്രതികളെ രക്ഷിക്കാനാണ് മാനേജ്‌മെന്റും കുറ്റക്കാരുടെ രക്ഷിതാക്കളും ശ്രമിക്കുന്നതെന്നും എസ്.എഫ്.ഐ. ആരോപിച്ചു.
